In case you missed the last one…
Louis Moholo-Moholo, Sibanye (We Are One): Duets with Marilyn Crispell (Intakt) — I’m reviewing this and two other Crispell-related titles for the March issue of All About Jazz-New York. I missed Moholo’s throw-down with Marshall Allen in Philly June 2007 (went to the wrong venue!); this was recorded the very next day in Baltimore.
Mike Holober & The Gotham Jazz Orchestra, Quake (Sunnyside) — Pushing it, maybe, to include both a Beatles and a Stones tune, but Holober’s arrangements convince and his original writing is seriously brilliant. The band kills.
Garrison Fewell, Variable Density Sound Orchestra (Creative Nation) — An intense two-guitar chamber group led by the Boston guitarist, whose output with colleague Eric Hofbauer is looking more and more essential.
Jesse Stacken, That That (Fresh Sound New Talent) — Solidly inventive pianist and trio, brings Ethan Iverson somewhat to mind. He’s at Roulette on Thursday, Feb. 19 and it should be nice.
