Kindergarten crisis

Bassist Ben Allison and his daughter Ruby are prominently mentioned in this NY Times article about the lack of available space in public school kindergartens this fall — a situation brought on by increased construction of high-rises in Manhattan, a consequent rise in population, and apparently no plan on the part of the city to expand school capacity accordingly. Just another example of education being government’s last priority when it should be the first.

I’m throwing my support to these aggrieved parents because my wife and I are expecting a daughter in July and can readily imagine ourselves in this situation in a few years.

There’s a rally on the City Hall steps on Wednesday, May 6 at 4 p.m. Arrive 20 minutes early to allow time to go through security. More here and here.
