Oliver Lake Organ Quartet
Sun., Sep. 27, 8pm. $12. International House, 3701 Chestnut St. 215.895.6546 www.arsnovaworkshop.org

If you think of the jazz avant-garde as insular, a world apart, consider alto saxophonist Oliver Lake, whose work with Björk, Mos Def, Meshell Ndegeocello and others has set an all-embracing example (particularly for his sons, drummer Gene and turntablist Jahi). A St. Louis native and cofounder of the influential Black Artists Group and the World Saxophone Quartet, Lake has covered about every base: poetry, visual art, theater projects, orchestral music, a steel pan group, a big band, Trio 3 with Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille. This week he’ll appear with his Organ Quartet, a funky, swinging beast featuring organist Jared Gold, trumpeter Freddie Hendrix and drummer Bill McLellan. — David R. Adler
