I’ve been lax in posting about music, so here are a few recent highlights:

—Watching Christopher Taylor play Ligeti’s complete Piano Etudes at the Miller Theater. Verging on superhuman.

—Hearing Peter Apfelbaum’s great Hieroglyphics band at Symphony Space tonight (or last night, I should say).

—Listening to Yes’s Tales From Topographic Oceans for the first time in probably 15 years, on my new Rega P2 turntable, manna from heaven.

—Listening to reissues of Andrew Hill’s Judgment and Bobby Hutcherson’s Oblique back to back. The Hill disc features Hutch; the Hutch disc features Herbie Hancock. Both are vibes/piano/bass/drums.

—Listening to an advance of Andrew Hill’s forthcoming disc Time Lines, which marks the pianist’s much-anticipated return to Blue Note Records. Featuring the great Charles Tolliver on trumpet and youngbloods Greg Tardy (tenor/clarinet), John Hebert (bass) and Eric McPherson (drums). Watch for it in late February.

—Listening to Charles Koechlin, Chamber Music with Flute (Hanssler Classic), an astonishing set of pieces for flute/alto sax/piano, two flutes/clarinet, flute/clarinet/bassoon and other combinations. Harmonically peculiar, tonally rich.
