I can’t fathom all this fawning over McCain’s speech at Liberty University. The senator basically went there to retract his previous condemnation of Jerry Falwell, so that Christianist wackos might consider voting for him in a Republican primary. McCain said:

It should remain an argument among friends; each of us struggling to hear our conscience, and heed its demands; each of us, despite our differences, united in our great cause, and respectful of the goodness in each other. I have not always heeded this injunction myself, and I regret it very much.

Fine sentiments, but shouldn’t we read between the lines? McCain initially called on Republicans to shun Falwell as a moral duty. He was right. Now he’s trying to say he didn’t mean it.

Politics as usual from the “straight-talk express.”
