Evil: when no other word will do

It pains me to post this right after an item about CDs. But this is reportage from Iraq that I want to preserve before it goes behind the NYT archival wall. Regarding the calculated slaughter of commuters traveling from Baghdad to Baquba on June 4:

The roadside executions took place on a road north of Baghdad, near a village called Ain Laila, a police official in Baquba said. Gunmen in three vehicles set up a fake checkpoint and stopped a car and two minibuses along the road to Baquba around 7 a.m. local time, he said.

The gunmen stepped onto the buses and began to execute the riders, the official said. Some tried to run away, but were gunned down, Reuters reported. Two riders survived.

Among the dead were seven students in their late teens and twenties, who were heading to final exams in their university in Baquba, said a resident in the area who had spoken to a relative of one of the dead. Five young men were studying sports, including Abbas Qadouri, 20, and two women were in the English and agriculture departments.

It’s my understanding these were Shias, slain with utmost cruelty, by lord knows what variety of Sunni gang. Grieve for these poor souls and their stricken families.
