In his nomination speech last week, Barack Obama concluded with remarks about rebuilding a sense of “common purpose” in America. You could brush this off as mushy noble talk, but in fact it’s one of the key strengths of the Obama campaign — the drive to frame old problems in new ways and move this country out of the tired old culture-war ditch. The contrast with this week’s GOP convention couldn’t be clearer. The notion of a common purpose is entirely absent; instead we get rants from Rudy Giuliani against “cosmopolitanism,” and mockery of the very idea of community organizing from Sarah Palin. The Republicans are branding themselves as the feminists (!) in this campaign. In fact they are its Stalinists.
