Power’s strengths

During primary season, Samantha Power said an unguarded thing about Hillary Clinton and had to step away from the Obama campaign. It’s too bad the American public knows her name thanks largely to this inconsequential episode.

One can gauge Power’s caliber partly from the ignorant bile she’s attracted from the far right and the far left. During the campaign, Spectator columnist Melanie Phillips leveled the bogus claim that Power had accused Israel of genocide toward the Palestinians. Now blogger Louis Proyect, an “unrepentant” fan of left-wing autocrats in Cuba and Venezuela, is denouncing Power as a liberal imperialist.
Much like Obama himself, and much unlike her critics, Power is a judicious and morally serious figure. She deserves a position of influence in the incoming administration.
