Right-wing Freudian slip watch

From today’s NY Times:

”But I do know that it’s true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down,” said [William] Bennett, author of ”The Book of Virtues.”

Read it again. He “knows that it’s true.”

Could Bill Bennett sink any lower in public esteem after earlier revelations of his compulsive gambling? Oh yes, he could.

Presumably he was discussing the book Freakonomics — specifically its claim of a correlation between higher abortion rates and lower crime rates. I haven’t read it, but to my knowledge the claim has little or nothing to do with race. Bennett called aborting black babies “impossible, ridiculous and morally reprehensible”; his intention was to caution against the reasoning found in Freakonomics. But the offensive scenario was a product of his own mind. No one but Bennett had even suggested it. So it revealed much about his inner thinking: that black babies are born criminals, apparently.
