The Inbetweens — guitarist Mike Gamble, bassist Noah Jarrett and drummer Conor Elmes — are a ragged, rocking jazz trio that could be Brooklyn’s answer to the Nels Cline Singers. The band packs a lot into 41 minutes on their new Quantum Cowboy: structurally ambitious tunes, raw overlapping beats and textures, offhand lyricism and a teeming multiplicity of guitar sounds, from clean surf twang to the rudest fuzztone. Gamble, heard around town with Pete Robbins’ siLENT Z, Todd Sickafoose’s Tiny Resistors and others, uses loops and live electronics to make sound ricochet through a room. The Bill Frisell precedent is there, but Gamble follows his own map and defies expectations. — David R. Adler
