Geri Allen & Timeline
Sat., Dec. 4, 7:30pm. $32-$38. Kimmel Center, 260 South Broad St. 215.731.3333 www.kimmelcenter.org

Hailing from the hard-bop capital of Detroit, pianist Geri Allen has always made a point of stretching jazz’s parameters, from her early work with Steve Coleman and Charlie Haden to her ’90s duo and quartet summits with the great Ornette Coleman. She’s had an especially strong 2010, releasing the gorgeous solo piano disc Flying Toward the Sound as well as a live album with Timeline, a quartet featuring “tap percussionist” Maurice Chestnut. Her Kimmel show is ostensibly a tribute to Thelonious Monk, but Allen is sure to follow her own muse, with veteran bassist Kenny Davis and new-blood drummer Kassa Overall. Chestnut will get physical, putting a modern spin on a dance form that goes way back. — David R. Adler
