Joe Lovano & Chris Potter in Philly

I had a rewarding onstage conversation last night with Joe Lovano, who came to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to premiere “Shimmers of Light,” an extended work inspired by the 1951 Ellsworth Kelly painting Seine (pictured at left). Joe and I recorded a podcast prior to the show as well — it’s downloadable free from iTunes.

Joe was joined by his Street Band, with Judi Silvano on vocals, Marilyn Crispell on piano, Billy Drewes on reeds and percussion, Tim Hagans on trumpet, Ed Schuller and Scott Lee on bass and John Riley on drums.

Next Friday (May 27th) I’m heading back to the museum to interview Chris Potter, who’ll premiere his own Ellsworth Kelly-inspired piece, titled “The Seine.” Chris will have Ralph Alessi on trumpet, Mark Feldman on violin, Scott Colley on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums.

Both commissions are supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Philadelphia Music Project.

I absolutely love this painting and I can totally understand your inspiration! It is now in Haus der Kunst in Munich and whole exhibition is amazing, but this is a highlight for me
