Benefits for Andrew

I’ve had a lot going on and thus never posted on the recent brain-surgery ordeal of alto saxophonist/bass clarinetist Andrew D’Angelo. Well, now I read the devastating news that Andrew’s tumor is cancerous. Darcy has more, a lot more, about donations, benefits and other links.

Human Feel, the brilliant quartet with Andrew, Rosenwinkel, Jim Black and Chris Speed, just reunited after a long hiatus and their new album Galore was on my top-ten list for 2007. I also mentioned the band again in the context of my recent piece on Tim Berne’s Bloodcount. So Andrew has been very much in my thoughts. More information on his status — it’s not easy reading.

PS – Ethan Iverson has some comments about Andrew’s membership in the “Animal” band, a quintet led a while back by Bad Plus bassist Reid Anderson. Indeed, Reid’s The Vastness of Space is one of the most original jazz records of the last 10 years (as I argued nearly 10 years ago). The first time I heard Andrew play was at an Animal band gig at the C Note in 1999. I remember how I pulled the coat of my friend Stephan Crump, demanding to know who that crazy alto player was. And once I was told I did not forget.
