Please forgive the lack of activity here — I’m finishing a cover story on Philadelphia jazz for the April 9 music issue of Philadelphia Weekly. What a ride it’s been. More posting soon. Meanwhile, you’re going to double over watching Bill Cosby talk about trying to play “Cherokee” behind Sonny Stitt.

[PS — The following won’t make sense until you watch the Cosby clip…. The funny part for me is that in music school, I saw this exact thing happen to a student bass player. Alto saxophonist Antonio Hart was visiting Reggie Workman’s ensemble class. (Yes, Workman, the very bassist in Cosby’s story.) Hart called “Cherokee,” the bassist flailed and Workman had to jump in. Then they played the shit out of it.]
